A short introduction to my personal brand using 3D animation. This motion piece is a logo reveal of different geometric shapes, creating a sliding puzzle.

During my third term in VFS, each motion design student was tasked with creating a 10-second animation. At the time, I was designing my own logo, and it would be a good idea to create a 3D version of it and have some type of sphere roll around the surface of the logo.

CONCEPTING

I first began drawing some thumbnails and sketches of how different shapes could make up my logo. The whole animation was planned by ending in a top view. That way, we could use various close-ups and camera angles that showed the shapes sliding into place.

DESIGN

To create a functioning sliding puzzle, I designed each piece directly in Illustrator. I chose one of the different versions of my thumbnails and began to vectorize it and break it apart in Illustrator using the Pathfinder tool. I color-coded each shape so it would be easy to identify and separate once we brought the splines into Cinema 4D. I then used simple modifiers on each of the splines to extrude them and add depth to them. I used wooden materials to create more detailed textures using bump and displacement maps.

ANIMATION

I planned the animation using only PSR properties to keep it simple and meet the deadline. I also used spline animations to control the main movement of the sphere while using its rotation as a secondary animation. That way, I had a lot more control over the keyframes of the sphere while also making it more dynamic with the graph editor.

Ultimately, I enjoyed learning Redshift and playing with the different materials for each shape. It was very satisfying watching each piece come together as the ball followed its journey through the logo.

CONCLUSION

The challenge I faced during this project was that I needed to become more familiar with Redshift renderer, and I really wanted to learn how to use it. I created all the materials to have a realistic look, making each shape have its own texture.
